Comics: Reviews for 4-17-13

Wow. What a Wednesday. Godzilla #11, Cable and X-Force #7, Nova #3, and Daredevil #25 all came out today. Four books in one week are the most I have purchased in a long time. The most shocking part is that ALL of them were good!

Nova #3 and Daredevil #25 were both solid. While Nova continues to build a great foundation for Sam Alexander as the new Nova, Daredevil revealed a new villain and continued to add more layers and complications to Matt Murdock’s life. As good as those issues were, I’m going to focus on what I thought were the best issues this week: Godzilla #11 and Cable and X-Force #7.

Godzilla #11 is a series of preliminary battle setting the stage for the main event. Hedorah, Kumonga, Angurius, Rodan, Battra, Titanasaurus, Gigan, and Mechagodzilla are all cast by the wayside in this issue, leaving Godzilla all alone to battle Spacegodzilla and Monster X. Our heroic team of Boxer and his allies are in trouble, trapped inside Mechagodzilla as he sinks to the bottom of New Your Bay. A lot happened in this issue with very little dialogue, but there were many nods to events from various Godzilla movies to keep me amazed. Early in the issue, Godzilla was battling Hedorah in a deep valley. Hedorah managed to fly away, leaving Big G stuck, unable to simply climb out. Paying homage to the terribly classic moment from “Godzilla vs The Smog Monster”, Godzilla curled up and used his radioactive breath to propel himself out of the canyon, and ‘fly’ after Hedorah. Later, it is revealed that the badly damaged Mechagodzilla has one more weapon operational. In a last ditch effort, our heroes activate the Absolute Zero Cannon, taken from “Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla”. Those types of easter eggs, combined with an enjoyable story and beautiful art, is well worth the price of admission. It has been revealed that this series is ending at issue #13 before a new Godzilla series is launched in June. My not so subtle prediction: Godzilla will defeat Spacegodzilla and Monster X with the help of Mechagodzilla, only to have Monster X transform in to Kaiser Ghidorah, just as in “Godzilla: Final Wars”. So the final issue will play out much like the end of that movie, with Godzilla defeating this new Ghidorah, saving the world, as a new age is ushered in amidst the fallen cities, setting the stage for a brand new series to kick off with a clean slate and new status quo. This Godzilla series is fun, albeit a little predictable at times.

Switching gears, Cable and X-Force #7 is an issue I have been waiting months for, ever since they revealed that #7 would be the long awaited confrontation between Cable and Cyclops. Their meeting didn’t come to blows, but it was very cool to see Cyclops say that no matter what, he would have his son’s back. He trusts that Cable has a reason for stealing this spaceship from S.W.O.R.D. headquarters, but even if he didn’t, he would be there to help him anyways. I thought I liked Cyclops before the events of A vs X, but now, I love the character. It looks like Boom Boom is going to be joining the team permanently, as she, Domino, Forge, and Dr. Nemesis were all taken hostage by an alien heading in to outer space. I have no doubt Cable will save the day Rambo-stlye, and totally kick the alien’s ass. Colossus is the most surprising character so far. I couldn’t care less about him going in to this series. Sure, he’s a classic X-Man, but he never really did anything for me. In this short 7-issue snapshot, his character has changed and grown so much, as we are able to see a constant struggle in his head about what to do. He is unsure of so much; it will be cool to see what happens when he finally makes up his mind to stand for something, instead of just letting these events happen around him. And what if he is forced to choose between Kitty and Domino? I’m starting to realize that this team is a great collection of characters that I never knew I loved, with the exception of Cable. (He’s always been the man.) That is what a great comic book writer does. Dennis Hopeless has made me care about characters that I didn’t care about before. That is the reason why this book is a must read. Whether they are in outer space, under the ocean, or fighting the Avengers, it’s the characters and their interactions that drive this comic.
